The 14 series passenger cars are a type manufactured from 1971, and the 500 series are a group that have been modified to be cold and snow resistant, such as having the passenger doors converted to sliding doors for use in Hokkaido. They were mainly used for sleeper express trains within Hokkaido, such as "Marimo" (Sapporo to Kushiro), "Daisetsu" (Sapporo to Abashiri), and "Rishiri" (Sapporo to Wakkanai). Each train was made up of a combination of sleeper cars and seat cars, and in particular, "Marimo" was fitted with a dream car with wider seat spacing in the reserved seat cars as a measure against the long-distance intercity buses that connected the same section in 1988, just after the transition to JR.
