●The 50 series 51 passenger cars were introduced in 1979 as general passenger cars bound for Hokkaido. Based on the 50 series passenger cars for Honshu, they were fitted with cold- and snow-resistant equipment such as double-glazed windows on the sides and axle-mounted generators on the bogies, and continued to be used on Hokkaido's main trunk lines, but were retired in 1994 before the 50 series for warmer climates. They are an indispensable vehicle when talking about passenger trains in Hokkaido.
