The EF15 was the standard freight electric locomotive, with 202 units mass-produced between 1947 and 1958. They were in service on DC sections across the country, from Kuroiso on the Tohoku Main Line in the north to Shimonoseki on the Sanyo Main Line in the south, until around 1987.
